HOW TO THROW A BIRTHDAY BASH ON BUDGET

It’s that time of the year that you need to organize, prepare, cook your kids birthday bash but with a minimum budget.  Every parent want what’s best for our children but due financial struggles we need to disappoint them sometimes and tell them “ Sorry we can’t have a birthday party.” It breaks my heart if I have to tell my children this. So this year was a pretty tough year for me and I was thinking can I make a birthday bash with a minimum budget of around € 50,-?
So this is what I did, since I am a dance teacher I thought wouldn’t be great to give a dance workshop for my sons birthday bash. My husband ever told me use the things that you already have and work with what you already can. If you have creative skills or a enough resources try to combine the things that you already have. If you can’t design there are images you can use on Pinterest or free text generators on the web. You just need to be creative with the things you need and find it on the web. But first things first the concept of the birthday bash was super hero dance workshop with a video clip shooting. One my son love super heroes, love to dance and a video clip shoot because we wanted this day to be remembered and once my son get older we could tease him and his friends with the video we made of them.  Come on guys we all save those home videos to tease our kids when they grow up, at least I know would.

LOCATION:
For the dance workshop I needed a dance studio with mirrors you don’t really need this u can do this at home or in the garden. I ever did a dance workshop of 2 hours without a mirror at a school and the kids still thought it was a lot of fun.  But since I am living in The Netherlands we have pretty good facilities so I called the local government and  I asked if they have an room with mirrors in one of their sport, activity and recreation buildings.  The rate per hour was for locals €12,80 that’s about $ 14,50. I reserved the place for 2 hours so it costs me € 25,60 so about $29,00. If I would have approached a local dance studio not owned by the government the hourly rate would have been 3 times more expensive. Like I said be creative as u can, ask the local church or maybe at your kids school, if you know anyone with a big space u can always barter with them.
What I always do when I find the perfect location I would scan the area for supermarkets or restaurants and shops. Because it could happen that you need something at the day of the event you could easily get what you need because you scanned the area. So if you forgot something you will not panic because you know where to go.

Design:
The location was fixed so I needed a cool logo with my son name on it,  to make stickers and put them on the lunch box and the water bottles and invitations. If you don’t have photoshop or any editing program u could use a free png text generator such as

Decoration:
Balloons and flags are a must don’t need to be so expensive either buy them or u can make flags your own ( diy tutorials on YouTube and Pinterest). This I really like is to print cute birthday pictures such as balloons, superheroes pictures or anything related to the party theme, I would print them out and frame them.

Food:
Because I rented a place a dance studio to be exact, it was not allowed to eat  so we couldn’t have a table where we could put food and beverage so I bought this. A disposable lunch box (organic lunchbox) and made burrito, with drinks, A gift back with treats. And the kids loved it. The lunch box and the food costs me €20,00 that’s about $ 22,75.
If you have coupons or great deals in the supermarket for the party I would say go for it. Buy food en beverage on sale. For the cake I bought a cake because the cake was on sale and it costs me €5,- about $5,69. But you could always bake your own cake or ask a friend who is good in baking.

Planning:
Because I have a full time job it means I can’t organize a birthday party in two days, it took me a 1 and half week to organize it. So this is how my schedule looked like.
  • Day 1: Visiting the location called the management and booked the place
  • Day2: Creating the logo and the invitations
  • Day 3: Cross check the invitation and send the invitations out
  • Day 4 : Bought the disposable organic lunch boxes
  • Day 5: Print the logo stickers at work/ did some groceries
  • Day 6: Did some groceries again ( because I forgot some stuff)
  • Day 7: Put stickers on the lunch boxes and the water bottles ( Kairos helped out he loved it)
  • Day 8 : Preparing the food
  • Day 9: BIRTHDAY TIME! we arrived at location 1 and half hour before the event started to do the decoration and buying some last minute things. Thank God the location was near a little mall.

BUDGETING
  • Venue:                € 25,60
  • Logo:                  €  0,00
  • Printing:              €  0,00
  • F&B:                   € 20,00
  • Decoration:         €  5,00
  • Cake:                  €  5.00
  • Total:            € 55,60

You could make a birthday party or an event less than €55,60 it would be much cheaper if you could just do it at your own place or a park ( spring and summer season) . I don’t know if you want to throw a birthday party in winter unless you live in Australia. Any ways this is how I throw an birthday bash for my oldest son 6th birthday.
